This is the true meaning of teamwork and compassion.
About 200,000 people were killed in the worst earthquake that ever happened on the small island nation of Haiti. Haiti is well-known for its beautiful beaches, friendly people and great island music. The perfect getaway for many rich and famous people around the world. So, when the people of Haiti were in trouble, these millionaire celebrities banded together and formed Hope for Haiti, which runs a telethon to raise money to help the stricken islanders.
What’s a telethon? Well, it is a help line which you call and say that you’ll give money to Hope for Haiti fund. If you call Hope for Haiti, you may even get to speak to Justin Timberlake, Robert Pattinson, Julia Roberts and George Clooney, and many more top favourites. What’s more, celebrity singers have joined in and put up their songs for download on iTunes. All the money from these song downloads will go to Hope for Haiti funds.
That’s a great way to give help to the needy, using your talent for charity.
MTV and George Clooney’s star-studded Hope for Haiti Now telethon, seen on dozens of channels around the world, has raised $58 million for the Haiti earthquake relief efforts, and counting — the most ever raised by any televised fundraiser. The songs performed and available for downloading on iTunes, also broke records for the biggest album pre-orders.
The first song to hit the top of the iTunes singles chart in 12 countries was “Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)” by Jay-Z, Bono, the Edge, and Rihanna, an original song written for the occasion.
The all-time single day record for advance album orders on iTunes was the Hope For Haiti Now collection, where reached number one in 21 countries, including the US. Justin Timberlake’s version of “Hallelujah” hit second place and five other songs from the telethon made the top 50.
All of the proceeds from the sales of songs and the album will benefit the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The artists’ inspired performances follow:
