Should you freeze out frozen foods?

Yikes! This microwave dinner pack doesn’t look so good in the freezer.

But worse news is coming…. frozen foods and dairy products that were pulled off the supermarket shelves in Southern China have been found to contain melamine contamination.  The thing is, it’s those plastic wrappers covering the food that are dangerous.  The wax layer in frozen food packaging contains petroleum and there is a possibility of this contaminating the frozen food.

So, what is the best thing to do?

Planet Green, a healthy living website, says the best thing to do is to not buy frozen foods (and chewing gum!).

Finish your food and save the planet?

The real relationship between you and your food is closely linked to saving the planet. In a recent study, scientists have found that throwing uneaten food into the rubbish bin is destroying the environment. This is because processing food waste uses a huge amount of precious fresh water. Rotting food also emits methane and carbon and this affects climate change too.

In America, more than ¼ of total fresh water consumption is actually used to process food wastes, and 300 trillion barrels of oil per year are used to power the process. On top of that, an average person throws out nearly 200 grams of food a day. This situation is made worse by all the different kinds of great food and food products available, and the clever marketing and advertising campaigns that make people buy more than what they need.

So, you can make a difference when you take only what you can eat, and finish it.

Meanwhile to reduce food waste (and help the planet):
Make a shopping list : help Mom make shopping lists and stick to them; buy only what you need; prepare smaller portions.
Use leftovers : safely store food to keep it fresh and safe; freeze leftovers in individual portions for later use; combine them with other items.
Start a compost pile : To keep food from rotting in a landfill, begin a compost pile in your garden, which will also improve the soil.
Donate food : You and your family can develop a healthy attitude towards food when you donate some to the needy and poor once in a while.

So, take what you need, finish it and save the world.
